Shelby Should Be

written and illustrated by Tracy S. Lee

A picture book about self-love and the power of being true to yourself.

SYNOPSIS: Shelby is an artist who loves to express herself in her art journal, but her Shelby Should Be keeps getting in the way. Who is Shelby Should Be? She’s a made-up idea about who Shelby thinks she “should” be.

my story:

Representation + Belonging

Shelby Should Be is the book I wish existed when I was a little girl. Growing up, I didn’t see a lot of Asian Americans represented in the media.

I longed for more Asian American heroines, so I decided to create one.

My own Shelby Should Be

I know what it feels like to struggle with self-doubt and feeling “not enough.”

Since my early twenties, I have been on a personal journey to know and love myself more deeply, and let go of perfectionism. This has been my work.

Along the way, I’ve discovered a passion for empowering others to love and believe in themselves too.

I created Shelby Should Be with this intention at heart.

I hope Shelby encourages others to unleash their inner magic by recognizing their unique qualities as beautiful.

Whoever you are, wherever you are, may you express your magic.

What I got from this book is - don’t let anyone put you down, and tell them what your power is, what makes you you!

I bought this book for my friend’s daughter, but after reading it, I bought one for myself. Shelby represents the little girl in me and helps me get in touch with that little girl i have been neglecting. It is a message i want for all girls growing up.”

Growing up, I never got to read kids’ books with Asian American heroines. i’m so glad my daughter will get to read “Shelby Should be.” Beautiful illustrations and an even more beautiful message about being yourself. Great gift for any child and parent.
